Defense forces and intelligence agencies use binoculars to observe the enemy from a safe distance. Young or old all would agree that it is impossible to bird watch with out a pair of binoculars.
To correct this, two prisms are placed inside the binoculars, between the objective and the eyepiece. Most binoculars are used to view objects at very far distances and have to be focused for the viewer to see things clearly. Digital binoculars are a cheap alternative, and can be picked up for considerably less money, and usually have a built-in camera.
There are giant binoculars available with higher magnifications and apertures which are designed for astronomy use but you will certainly need a sturdy tripod or mount to use them. Looking at the moon on occasion with a telescope looks like snow has dropped on the surface of the moon. You can buy bird watching binoculars for as much as a thousand dollars.
Five pound binoculars will get heavy fairly fast. Get a good pair and enjoy!
